This renovation revitalised a dated, impractical beach shack, proving that thoughtful, small-scale upgrades can significantly enhance both functionality and longevity while preserving a home’s character.
The original cedar kitchen, while full of charm, was deteriorating and becoming a maintenance burden for the client. Our goal was to create a modern, highly functional kitchen that felt at home within the mid-century aesthetic. A restrained material palette—white joinery, muted blue-grey tiles, and polished concrete—allows the original cedar lining boards and bluestone walls to remain the defining architectural elements.
In the guest bedroom, outdated bunk beds made way for custom-built Blackbutt timber beds, designed with integrated storage, concealed lighting, and charging stations to maximise space and enhance everyday convenience. We collaborated with a local carpenter to bring these pieces to life, reinforcing a connection to quality craftsmanship.
Sustainability was a core focus, with salvaged timber, waste diversion, and durable materials ensuring a low-maintenance, enduring retreat. Carefully managed from concept to completion, this project elevates both style and practicality while honouring the essence of the original beach shack.
